What is it like doing a student placement at OurCommunity Project (OCP)? Student Reflection by Hannah Rochester

Jan – July 2021. My placement at Our Community Project (OCP) helped me understand this field of work and how to operate within it. I was given a broad range of opportunities to learn, observe, grow and contribute. I was given good instruction, guidance, and help so I knew what to do and how to do it. I gained both broad and in-depth exposure to OCP and its programs and initiatives. From placement, I learned about how organizations and workplaces function. I gained awareness about what challenges/pressures are present in this field of work, e.g., funding. I observed that being flexible, responsive, proactive, and adaptive were qualities staff members utilised to accomplish their individual roles and work effectively as a team. I learned a range of practical skills at the Grocer, e.g., rostering, retail practices, admin, managing volunteers, time management. I was given the opportunity to practice, develop and share the skills and knowledge I have gained from my degree. It was helpful to be able to shadow Adrianne in her role. This gave me the opportunity to see what the community development field is like, what qualities/skills are an asset to the role, and what the day-to-day tasks involved. I enjoyed helping organise the Lantern Parade, networking, and being part of the community event. I valued that the staff shared their expertise with me, gave me helpful feedback and encouragement. Having an equal mix of observing and doing tasks helped me grow in confidence. I was trusted and given autonomy to carry out tasks, be proactive and contribute to the daily activities. I was given responsibilities equal to my level of expertise and ability. The staff allowed me to work to my interests and explore new tasks, while also giving opportunity for me to go outside my comfort zone and try things a little more challenging. As a placement student, the staff and volunteers made me feel like a valued and equal member of the team. I was well supported throughout my placement.
